Meta, the social media giant behind Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is temporarily shutting down its Threads app in Turkey starting April 29, 2024. This decision comes after a clash with the Turkish Competition Authority (TCA) regarding data-sharing practices between Threads and Instagram.
The TCA raised concerns about how Meta merged user data between the Threads and Instagram platforms. According to the authority, Meta linked Threads profiles to existing Instagram accounts without obtaining clear user consent.

In March 2024, the TCA issued a temporary demand against Meta, prohibiting them from further data sharing between Threads and Instagram. Meta, however, maintains that their practices comply with Turkish regulations. The company announced its intention to appeal the TCA's decision.
If you're a Threads user based in Turkey, you'll receive notifications about the app's closure and the option to either deactivate or delete your profile entirely. Meta also offers the ability to download your data before the shutdown.
This shutdown is specific to Turkey and won't affect Threads functionality in other regions. Additionally, Meta's other services like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp will continue to operate normally in Turkey.
The situation in Turkey highlights growing global scrutiny around data privacy and how tech companies manage user information. India's recently proposed Digital Competition Bill, 2024, echoes similar concerns, aiming to restrict the cross-sharing of data between platforms without user consent.
While Meta expresses hope to bring Threads back to Turkey, the outcome hinges on resolving the data-sharing dispute with the TCA. The company's appeal process and the TCA's final decision will determine the fate of Threads in the Turkish market.
