Gemini is a new series of AI models by Google, developed by DeepMind, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. This new series has opened a new page in the history of Google and has also opened a new front in the race for AI with the predecessor models, BERT.
The company launched the first model of Gemini 1 in December 2023, and the Gemini 2 model was launched in 2024. The Gemini model is more flexible and powerful than its precursors, BERT.
The deep research work by Google in AI, combined with the progress made in reinforcement learning as well as transformer architecture, resulted in this model. They want Gemini to be more than just a chatbot: that is, a general model that powers everything from search to complex problem-solving tasks.
They have also integrated it into their home assistance app. Read the whole blog here.
